Places to visit
Five kilometers away, is the bustling market town of Apt where you can buy the freshest vegetables and produce from the surrounding farms. On Saturday, the market comes to life and people pour in from all parts of the Luberon Valley. There are many wonderful cafes where you can sit and while away many an hour under the shade of a plane tree.
Apt has supermarkets, banks and restaurants. Good bookshops where you can buy English books; newspapers and maps of the region can be found in the main pedestrian thoroughfare.
There is also an abundance of interesting food shops specializing in goat's cheeses, glace fruit or hand-made chocolates. Sometimes, the local cinema shows a movie in English (but you have to be lucky!).
Further field, you can easily drive to the cultural cities of Avignon, Aix-en Provence (about 45 minutes) or Aries, Pont du Gard, Nimes and Orange (just over 1 hour). A real treat is to spend the day in the romantic fishing village of Cassis east of Marseille (about 1.5 - 2 hours).
The people in the Luberon Valley are typically generous with their time and patience. They are accustomed to tourists from all parts of the world, who descend on this little part of paradise.
In Place de la Fontaine and Rose Cottage, you will find a book, which we have written about the Luberon Valley. It contains handy hints about where to find the easiest parking spots, where to go to buy typically Provencal items or most importantly where to go to lunch. We help to point out some places of interest, which are not always found in the guidebooks.
